1st Quarter U.S. Household Wealth Now $12 Trillion. Where's the money?
This week it was reported that the U.S. household net worth (real estate, cars, other assets) stood at $12 trillion. (It's about the same, but up more than 1/2 trillion from the year before.) That number is a lot larger than we thought it was and exceeds total household debt (at $9 trillion) by about 4x.
Even though the total wealth is rising, one might think that the increases are occurring because of some unforeseen economic advantage (for example, Japan). But they aren't. The majority of that increase is occurring because of the low and declining interest rates (credit) environment and equity prices that we've been living with for the past year and a half.
While this is good news, it is not good news for the underlying economy or real estate markets. One might think that the household (and non-financial company) net worth was way larger when the economy was in trouble and that the economic activity was happening on someone's dining room table, where the wealth was accumulated. But now that the economy is reasonably strong, the wealth, as a percentage of GDP, has dropped back down to levels seen in the early 2000s.
That's a pretty dramatic and positive change. The actual size of household net worth has increased by a lot (maybe 100x) since the 1970s. But that growth is more than anything that was accomplished during the 1970s or 1980s, when the economy was weak. The bulk of that increase occurred during the 1980s, which, in an equity valuation sense, was a disaster for both households and for business.
So much for the magic of 'risk-free' cash. Many people are not benefiting from the wealth growth because their financial wealth is not in risk-free assets. They are invested in real estate, stock, business, etc. They are in fact getting more of a 'bump' than a'miracle' as those risk 01e38acffe
