Interstate Highway 440 (I-440) is a north–south Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It runs from Interstate 25 in Ruidoso to Interstate 40 at Las Cruces.
Route description
I-440 begins at the northern edge of the village of Ruidoso, at the I-25 interchange with NM 54. From the northbound, it forms a partial loop off the exit from I-25 to U.S. Route 84, which provides access to downtown Ruidoso. I-440 heads to the southeast and through a quiet portion of the Ruidoso Downs racetrack. At this point, I-25 exits to the west toward Santa Rosa. I-440 then continues southeast through White Sands National Monument, emerging onto the flat coastal plain of the Rio Grande Valley between the Organ Mountains and the Dragoon Mountains. The route continues southeast, mostly running on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, before turning south and running parallel to the river, passing east of White Sands to Paso del Norte.
Near El Paso, Texas, I-440 meets the eastern end of I-10, and continues to run southeast. The route reaches Las Cruces, the largest city in New Mexico, where it merges with I-10 for a short distance before splitting off to the south. I-440 reaches its eastern terminus at Interstate 40 at the US 285 interchange. The freeway ends abruptly at this interchange, while US 285 continues eastward.
The entire route is generally two lanes with no shoulders for most of its length. The only exceptions are near the end of the eastern part of the route, in Las Cruces and El Paso, where ac619d1d87
